Top 5 Feel Goods 9.11.20

Today is September 11th and it’s a somber day as we remember all those who we’ve lost and think about their loved ones/family members missing them. One positive reflection I have from this day is the strength it showcases in how we as Americans rebuild, we rise and we come together to honor those who served to protect and care for us. Hopefully, some of these items will also show how even in the darkest times, there is still light to be found.

1. I love anything having to do with cards and kindness so Catherine Knight’s random acts of kindness are right up my alley. While she travels for work, Catherine hands out cards to strangers at Houston’s airport. Each card has an uplifting message to brighten someone’s day. Catherine mentions in this article, “I just want somebody’s day to be better. I really just want to make the world a better place. People need to know there is still kindness in the world.” During this stressful time, particularly traveling, it’s nice to hear that Catherine is trying to make people feel good among it all. A kind word and a handwritten message at that, can really change someone’s whole day. I’m here for it.

2. Angels do exist! This courageous 18 year old, Justin Gavin, saved the lives of a mother and her three young children. Latrisha Chambers’ SUV was on fire and she didn’t know it. Justin tried to alert her that her car was on fire and then, ran to save the family. As he was telling them to get out, Latrisha said she was shocked because she didn’t know the car was on fire. Justin ended up saving her 9, 4 and 1 one year old! Latrisha Chambers said, “There’s nothing I could do to show you or ever repay what you did for me and my children, ever.” The Waterbury police department gave Justin Gavin the chief’s commemorative coin which is only reserved for officers. Justin says at the end of this article that this event made him want to become a police officer or fire fighter. What a brave young man doing good!

3. I wrote about service/therapy dogs on the blog this week because September is National Service Dog Month. This story about toothless senior dog, Kismet gives me all the feels. So many people have fears and anxiety when going to the dentist. His owners, Dr. Garrett, dentist and Debra Garrett, dental hygienist, bring Kismet to work and Kismet is available to cuddle or snuggle with patients during exams, cleanings or root canals. They adopted him at 13 years old and say especially during the pandemic, Kismet has helped everyone get into the swing of things. Senior dogs are so wonderful and often overlooked so I’m so glad that they not only rescued Kismet, but now, Kismet is giving back in the most selfless and loving way. Read more of Kismet’s story here.

4. I don’t know about y’all, but flowers just make me happy and a field of sunflowers?! That’s just perfection as is this story of a family farm that planted more than 2 million sunflowers in their field where people can come to picnic and enjoy the fresh air. Especially during the pandemic when socializing indoors is not as safe as the outdoors (with masks & still social distancing, of course) this sounds like the perfect place to gather and smile. What a sweet and lovely gesture for Thompson Strawberry Farm to do for their community and their visitors. Read the full story here.

5. Listen, I love a Mama who is giving people the business in a cheeky way! Comedian, Dena Blizzard’s take on the “plans” we’ve received about school are hilarious. Even if you aren’t a parent, watching this will still make you laugh. It’s new territory we are all in with school this year so to make the best of it, we all need to chuckle just a bit and take it in stride.
